A Lung Transplant Is the Only Hope?
My husband's health just kept getting worse. I truly believe it was the sedentary lifestyle and all of the drugs they had him on that was making him get so bad. He went to his lung specialist who told him he only had 13% lung function left. The doctor suggested that he apply for admission into the lung transplant program.
My husband, "Little Man" (who wasn't such a little man anymore), and I spent 3 days at a major city hospital while they were doing all of the testing to see if he would qualify for a lung transplant. I wasn't sure that it was a good idea though. The majority of people only live for about a month, some a year, even after going through all of that. It turns out that my husband was accepted.
After that my husband had to get out of his recliner and go to rehab to exercise 2 - 3 times a week. He could still drive, but he couldn't carry his own oxygen. He got me to go several times, but I hated riding with him. His driving was truly scary at this point. He was always a careless driver, but now he wasn't getting enough oxygen to his brain, and he was on continuous pain medication. I refused to ride with him. I told him that he was scaring me, and that I would drive him to do his exercise. He blew up and drew his fist back at me! I thought he was going to punch me in the face. He said he would drive, and his brother could meet him there and exercise with him if I didn't want to help him!
My husband worked hard on exercising, and was getting to the point where he could actually walk a distance without stopping. It's interesting that if you have more muscle tone, then your body doesn't use as much oxygen to do normal activities. They told him that before he could get on the lung transplant list that he would have to be able to walk into the hospital and back out after the transplant.
Lesson Learned: Some people only want things done their way and will not compromise even if their life depends on it!
