Radio Station Sales and Marketing

When I got the job at the radio station my life changed a lot. I was out in the public more and meeting new people. It was a bit concerning at first when I found out that most of the other people in the sales department were considerably younger than me. I thought originally that it was a disadvantage for me, but I soon found out otherwise. What I found out was that I actually had an advantage with all of the years and experience I had in marketing, primarily network marketing. My biggest adjustment was wrapping my head around selling "AIR" vs. a physical product.

I started my job working in one of the 4 offices the radio station owned. Two were actual studios and two were satellite offices. I was in a satellite office between the studios. I remember my boss, a very nice woman who always had my back saying, "You really get this don't you?" I guess they have had a lot of people over the years, and there have only been a small percentage who were good at marketing.

I started this job in August of 2019. Things were very good as far as developing client marketing growth and also with getting new clients. In 2020, due to Covid-19, everything changed dramatically. Everyone in the marketing department was asked to work from home for several months. Then shortly after we were allowed to return, one of the marketing people who worked in the office with me quit. At that point, I was asked to take over all of her clients. This gave me a very large list of clients to to handle.

Then not long after that, my boss quit to take another job. This left the sales manager from our biggest studio office the responsibility of being sales manager for both studios and the other two satellite offices. This was difficult for me, because he kept asking me to do jobs that my former boss did, take care of the huge list of clients I had, and with no raise in pay!

At his point, the owner of the stations called me into his office. He asked if I would be willing to move into my home office so that he could shut down the satellite office that I was working from. Since I had done it during the lockdown, I didn't really have an issue with it. It would actually save me some time everyday not having to drive to the office. The station owner sure loved it. He saved a lot of overhead by closing the office. Then I realized that I would be paying for the internet, the electric etc. So I asked for a raise for this reason. I was given a small raise, but it wasn't even close to what I really needed. They don't pay me enough to work 60 or 80 hours a week either, and that's what it would take to keep up will all of the accounts I had!

Then, my sales manager moved to a city 4 hours north, but thought he could do his job remotely and only be in the office one day a week. He was fired, and two men who had less seniority than I have, and less experience were promoted and given raises. They assumed the positions of sales managers! This was so unfair! Was this because they are men, and I am the only woman now on the marketing team? I think I could have a real chance at taking them to court for this, and winning the case! I'm tired of being treated like an inferior person by men!

Lessons Learned: People will take advantage of you if they can. Women are still not treated as equals in the workplace. Trying to be nice doesn't always work.
